I’ve been working on my hockey warm ups for a few weeks now and I’m glad I took the time to get them down. As I’ve gotten better at skating, I’ve been focusing more on my technique and less on my speed. The main goal is to have a technique that is good enough to be a viable option for the NHL, but I’m not looking for anything more than the basics to be successful.
You need to start by skating with your head up and your shoulders back. This is the hardest part of hockey coaching and Ive found that I get better by doing it. As you get better, the ice becomes more forgiving and your speed drops.
That last part is exactly what I’ve been struggling with. I’ve been skating with my head up and my shoulders back for the last 20 years or so, and the last 20 years have been pretty good. If you’re the type who likes to play to the best of your ability, then you will also want to improve your skills, and your ability to play better.
If you are the type who enjoys playing to the best of your ability, you should probably find some time to practice. The most important part of any skill is how you think about it. If you have a hard time thinking about a shot, you probably aren’t going to be very good at it. If you have a hard time thinking about a play, it probably isn’t going to be very fun to play.
