I will never forget this statement by the legendary athlete, Michael Jordan. In his infamous conversation with his then-girlfriend in which he used the words, “I’m too big for shoes”, he was talking about his desire to be the best at a sport that he loved, as well as his inability to stop himself from looking back at his feet while he was doing it.
The “I’m too big for shoes” thing is very much like the “I’m too big for a plane” excuse. It’s just another example of a “self-deception” used by one of the greatest athletes of the 20th century.
In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, Nike CEO Mark Parker said his company has been working on a “great” new sneaker. In fact, it looks as if he, too, is talking about his own insecurities. I’m not making this up.
Parker himself had previously said, “There were days when I felt like the sneaker was too big,” but now he says he feels comfortable with the shoes he has, which are designed to be on the smaller side. With the new Nike Air Max 3, he said, “I have to go to a smaller size,” but he also said he likes the “little changes” they make to their designs.
The company is doing this because they don’t want to risk alienating any of their existing players by building a new sneaker just for them. They’re hoping to attract more casual followers to the brand by giving them more options. They need players to wear the shoes they already have, and they’re not ready to let go of that kind of marketing power.
It appears that Nike wants to do this to a certain extent, but they clearly are still not willing to give up the power that comes from giving a brand to a few thousand dedicated fans. The Air Max 3 is a brand that has been around since 1999, but it seems they’re willing to give this brand to a few thousand people for a few hundred dollars, but they won’t be giving them Air Max 3s because they don’t want to alienate any of their existing fans.
If you ask me, it’s a bit of a mess. Some fans are ready to hate on nike for their decision to give this brand to so many people. But that’s not really much of a complaint. I think it’s more a complaint that they’re going to get people who are more interested in the product than their marketing. I dont think nike has a choice. Nike’s marketing power is incredible.
I think it is worth noting that the whole thing with the hockey sticks is a bit silly. The idea that nike is going to give people hockey sticks because they are a certain brand is an insult to the fans of the other brands, and that is a really dumb move. But I also think its more a complaint that they are going to get people who are more interested in the product than their marketing. I dont think nike has a choice. I think it’s just a bunch of lazy marketing on their part. Because the truth is, if they gave us the hockey sticks, we would buy the game. We wouldn’t even care that they were named after them.
I don’t think Nike has to be so self-assured about their marketing. I think they just need to use it more strategically. We’ve already seen Nike’s marketing to be really slick. They’ve done a great job with the hockey stick name. We’ve seen Nike’s marketing to be really slick with the hockey stick logo. These logos are so clean and simple to apply that it will be hard to screw up. They’ve done a great job with the hockey stick marketing.
